Our Review:
The Bernina Aurora 440 is a very nice machine, its very well made, easy to use and performs like a top of the range sewing machine should. It has the BSR system which is used when doing free machine embroidery / quilting which in a nut shell, senses and monitors the speed of fabric movement and in turn adjusts the stitch speed automatically, this helps to maintain a uniform stitch length. So you move the fabric and the machine controls the speed for you! This function has its limitations in that the machine is only capable of 900 stitches per minute and therefore you mustn’t move the fabric too quickly. In our experience, customers that have lots of experience in free machine quilting do not like this function and prefer to do it the old fashioned way however those with limited experience of free machine embroidery/quilting love this function as it basically holds your hand which gives the user more confidence.
All proper Bernina machines are a bottom loading machine i.e. the bobbin goes in a metal bobbin case which fits into the front of the machine as apposed to dropping in at the top under a clear plastic cover. A bottom loading machine such as a Bernina in our opinion has a far superior stitch quality to that of a top loading machine, the tension is better and more uniform, the tension can also be altered very easily on the bobbin case, all this combined makes free machine embroidery far easier with less problems. These qualities can also be found when sewing normally on thick or thin fabrics and on narrow or wide stitches.
On the other hand bottom loading machines are in the main noisier, slower and not as smooth to sew on as a top loading sewing machine.
Owning a Bernina Aurora 440 is like owning a grandfather clock, some people will love the sound, feel, aesthetics and ease of use and some people may find it old fashioned however in our opinion the Bernina quality surpasses all the competition.
