Fabric Postcard Tutorial

These fabric postcards are great projects for using up all of your scrap bits of fabric and bondaweb. They're quick and easy to do, it's great if you want to do a small project and ideal to give to a quilty friend.

Katrina's quilting group meets once a month and each month they create a postcard based on just one word. For todays tutorial, Katrina is making a postcard from the word "Tree".

What you need...

  • Background Fabric measuring 6" x 4"
  • Other bits of fabric - to create objects / picture
  • Bondaweb - enough to attach small bits of fabric together & another piece measuring 6" x 4"
  • Vilene 6" x 4"
  • Sewing Machine (threaded)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Iron

These Fabric Postcards can be fully customised - from the objects you cut out, to the background fabric. Today's tutorial is going to follow Katrina making a Christmas Postcard.

How To...

Start by drawing, on the back of Bondaweb, the shapes which will be on the postcard.

Once you have all of your objects drawn, iron the Bondaweb onto the back of your chosen fabric and cut them out.

Katrina cut out 3 triangles and 3 brown stumps.

Place your objects onto the background fabric, in the correct place, and iron.

Once you've got your pattern appliqued onto the fabric, you can run around the edge of the fabric objects with free motion or blanket stitch to hold it securely.

Next, measure 6" x 4" of Bondaweb - but make sure it is fractionally smaller to avoid any Bondaweb getting stuck to the ironing board and iron this onto the back of your postcard.

Bond the fabric postcard onto a piece of pelmet Vilene (6" x 4").

It is highly recommended to zig zag stitch around the edge of the postcard to hold everything together, and also to decorate.

For example, One of Katrina's friends used thread to decorate theirs.

Finally, Draw lines on the back of the Vilene to make it look like a postcard.

Just like that, you have used scraps to create a lovely fabric postcard to give to someone.
