Janome 1200d Overlocker Review

All garment sewists should invest in an overlocker machine.

If you’re just starting out your sewing journey or you’re a well-seasoned sewist, you should be using an overlocker to really finish off your projects professionally.

Are you in the market for an overlocker machine that’s easy to use and has more options than a basic overlocker? Here at The Sewing Studio, we want to make sure you’re sewing on a machine you’re going to love. And we really think that the Janome 1200D is that overlocker machine! It’s easy to use and is more than just an overlocker machine! It also functions as a coverstitch machine, really giving your garments that extra professionally polished look with perfectly pressed hems!

The Janome 1200D is the perfect addition to any professional or home sewing studio. It’s great for hobbyists who sew clothes for themselves and their loved ones and upholstery for their own home, and it’s also a workhorse for the professional sewist who runs their own business. It’s also a fantastic machine for professional companies that sew clothes and any other project that will require overlocking or cover stitching.

When it comes to overlockers, the first thing you should look at before making your purchase is how the machine is threaded. Luckily, the 1200D is easy to thread, as far as overlockers go. Each thread has its own lay-in tension dial that you thread by, wait for it, literally laying the thread in the colour-coded grooves. Everything is colour-coded when it comes to threading the machine, even the loopers underneath the sewing space.

Those lay-in tension dials also offer the operator automatic tension. There’s no need to change the tension with each different stitch- the machine will do it for you! However, if you do want to change the tension for any reason, you’re easily able to.

What’s the difference between an overlocker and a coverstitch machine and why would you need both?

Well, you certainly need both in order to create garments that look professionally made. If you’re making your own wardrobe or making clothes to sell or gift to other people, you want to own both types of machines, or better yet a machine that can do both!

Not only will both functions make your garments look perfectly polished, but they make your pieces last longer. You’ll have stronger seams and hems by using an overlocker and a coverstitch!

An overlocker trims away fabric as it sews using up to five threads to lock the raw edges into the stitch. It really makes the seams and hems sturdy so that the fabric won’t unravel over time or allow the seams to pop. If you’re making any sort of garment, you’ll want to invest in an overlocking machine!

A coverstitch sews up to three lines of thread and puts a professional finish on any hems and collars. You can see what a coverstitch can do just by looking at the sleeves or collar of any basic t-shirt. It helps the seams to lie flat and comfortably. Both functions can also create decorative stitches on any project.

You’ll also be able to create beautifully rolled hems very easily with this machine! Rolled hems are perfect for light weight fabrics to create a tiny hem that matches the delicate nature of the fabric itself.

Janome 1200d

The Janome 1200D is a great combination machine! It’s very easy to switch to and from the different functions and even easier to switch between the different stitches because there’s little to no need to switch out the presser foot or the needle plate as you might with other combination machines. Of course, there will be times that you do have to change the presser foot, but the machine comes with both feet you’ll need, and they’re very easy to switch out!

The 1200D can use anywhere from two to five threads at once. You can stitch up to 20 different stitches that are all customisable. Your stitches can be anywhere from 3.5mm up to 7.5mm in width and you can change the tension to suit any stitching needs.
