Overlocker Machines

When starting with an overlocker, it is best to go for one with lay-in tension dials as these are easier to thread and maintain tension to make overlocker easier. A lower looper threader is a handy advice to make threading easier. Don't go too basic as it may not have the power to go through thicker fabrics. Think about the types of things you want to make and look for features that make this easier, like a free arm for sewing tubular items.

An overlocker (or serger) has many uses, but predominately they sew seams whilst cutting away excess fabric to create professional-looking finishes to many different fabrics. Overlockers have differential feed for sewing stretchy fabrics or gathering. They can also sew rolled hems and are great for sewing in elastic. Some overlockers can sew a 2-thread flatlock stitch to join pieces of fabric together and some have 5 threads to create extra durable seams.

Some sewing machines offer an overlock stitch, which usually combines a straight stitch with a zigzag. While it can resemble an overlocked stitch when done properly, it isn’t as durable as true overlocking.

Things to look for are:
- Number of threads - this will determine the amount of stitch options available.
- Adjustable Stitch Length - to be able to sew with different types of fabrics.
- Lay-in tension dials - this type is easier to thread and keep consistent tension.
- Presser foot lift height and retractable cutting knife - useful for bulky items.
- Air threading - the easiest type of overlocker to thread.

Overlockers have developed over recent years to become more user-friendly, however it does depend on the model. The lower end of the market can be trickier to use, look out for a colour-coded thread path, lay-in tension dials and lower looper threader or air thread as overlockers with these features are generally easier to use.

Overlockers equipped with Air Thread technology and a built-in needle threader are the easiest to thread. These models simplify the process by threading the loopers with either a single puff of air or a continuous flow, depending on the specific design.
