If you plan to make a traditional patchwork quilt with 100% cotton patchwork fabric top, quilt wadding / batting in the middle layer and backing fabric on the bottom then you may decide to quilt it all by hand or sewing machine to stop the layers from shifting. Using a running stitch to finish your quilting project can make a huge difference to the appearance of the finished article, stitching around shapes to outline them or random quilting stitches. Consistent repetitive patterns all over the quilt can also be used with great success!
