Getting started with a new sewing machine.

You're now the proud owner of a new sewing machine! Before your stitching adventures begin, we have put together a handy guide of things to know & remember to help you get the most out of your sewing machine from day one.

Use quality needles

For smooth and even stitching use quality needles. Don’t be tempted to buy cheap. If you’re new to sewing machines, it’s important to know that there are specific needles for different types of fabric. For example, if you’re using your machine for quilting, use a quilting needle designed to sew through heavier layers.

We stock the Schmetz brand of needles which are generally considered to be the finest quality. They are universal and fit every machine we sell at The Sewing Studio.

Always buy good quality thread
All sewing machines work better with a good thread. We recommend DMC, Guttermann and Madeira threads for the best results.

Using your sewing machine needle threader

Threading your sewing machine correctly is the absolute basic starting point for learning to sew. Your machine manual will have diagrammatic instructions on how to thread your make of machine. Follow those and keep it handy to remind you how it’s done.

Tension
Getting the tension right on a machine takes some practice. Perfect sewing machine tension occurs when the top and bottom threads are perfectly balanced. That means you shouldn't see any little loops on either the top or bottom of your fabric, and the stitching should look even on both sides. Check your manual for the best setting for your type of fabric.

Use the correct bobbin for your machine
Different brands of sewing machines use a different size bobbin, it is easy to accidentally use the wrong one. If you are unsure call us for more advice.

Finally, don’t forget to…

Keep the box your machine is delivered in and all the additional packing materials in case you need to send back for warranty or servicing. When using a courier to transport your machine, it’s vital it’s securely packaged to avoid damage in transit which will not be covered by either the retailer or manufacturer.

Register your machine with the manufacturer to activate your warranty but to also hear about workshops and updates to operating software. You’ll receive a leaflet explaining how to do this in the box of your machine.

Just bobbin along? We're here whenever you need us or just want to share your latest sewing triumphs.
